I met my agent today, the Lovely Laura Bradford… and lovely she is! What a wonderful person. Not just because she believes in me even when I don’t believe in myself, but because she whole-heartedly believes in each and every one of her clients to an extent I didn’t realize until today. I won’t go into detail but it was wonderful to be able to meet her in person and get to really know her and how she feels about me, my writing, the industry, and hear examples of how I’m not the only one struggling. I feel like I’ve found a home with her at this agency, and with her other clients. We all get along so well and support one another and not a fake support either… it’s genuine heart-felt support and I love it.

I didn’t get any writing done today because I worked in the a.m., then putzed before getting ready to meet Laura, and then drove to Green Bay to chat it up with her loveliness for over an hour. Arranging to meet Laura while she was in Wisconsin at the WisRWA conference was the wisest decision I’ve made in a long, long time.

I won’t be able to attend the Lori Foster event this year as my oldest son is graduating (Gah! I’m getting old) and won’t be attending any other conferences this year either, so this was my only chance. Next year I’ll be at Lori Foster’s event in Ohio again. I LOVE it there. It’s a relaxed setting and so fun. Laura will be there this year as well as a ton of the Bradford Bunchers. Next year will be a blast!

Tee Hee!

Agent Love and Writing

March 27, 2008

Laura Bradford is the best agent ever. Just saying. I love her. She makes me feel great when I’m down and feeling insecure. My smartest moment was when I sent out partials all over and said, “Eh, what the heck. One more partial can’t hurt, right?” and sent it off to Laura. My wisest moment, ever. She IS Wonder Woman and she’s got a heart of gold.

For my writing, I’m doing revisions… well, additions actually since I’m adding a new chapter one to When Petals Fall. Nearly done. Less than one day of work and it’ll be all done. Woot! I love revisiting Lizzie and Jake, they did win Passionate Ink’s Stroke of Midnight Contest for me last year after all. But for this beginning, I needed to get it right. There is no room for error. Last shot deal here boys and girls. So, I started writing angsty thinking that’s how it’d be after seven years apart. Did. Not. Work. I wrote 1500 words and was like, meh. This sucks. And while it didn’t suck per se, it sucked for what I was trying to achieve. So I took some time to figure it out. I mean, Laura doesn’t breathe down my neck and say, “Revisions, now!” No, she lets me take my time to work shit out. So, I took it. Darn near two full weeks, but I got it. Instead of angsty, it’s light, witty, and full of sexual tension and attraction and I’m enjoying it very much. I also weaved the beginning of the suspense thread a tad earlier which I think totally works (though I do have to change that one tire scene, KATE! REMIND ME! Thanks!)

Overall, I’m pleased with what I’ve accomplished. Do I think I could have accomplished it faster? *shrug* Probably. Would it be as good? Probably not.

Now, once I get the last 1200 words or so written (tonight (Friday)), I’ll send it off to my crit partner Jen to go through and then to Kate to see if either Jen or I missed anything–Kate has the eyes of a hawk, love that! She sees things no one else can, amazing that sister of mine. I was saying… Then it comes to me to finish it up, tie off any loose ends, and zip it back to Laura for her input. I may or may not have more edits/revisions (which if I do I’ll fix immediately) and then it’s back to the lovely Laura to pitch to the editors.

Then! I’m back to my serial killer. Oh how I love this story. Felicity Harper and Gabe Morietti. Sigh. They are the most unlikely pair, yet they accentuate one another perfectly.

Tomorrow I’ll share an excerpt of When Petals Fall. I think maybe from the dance scene. What say you Kate? Dance scene? Or the very beginning? Hmm…

Thanks for listening to me ramble! Hugs chicas and chicos!!!

Great Industry Blogs

March 6, 2008

Before I start this post, I’m going to say that, absolutely NO, I am not looking for another agent.  I love my agent, the Lovely Laura Bradford.  She’s a totally awesome agent and she’s been kicking butt this past year… so much butt that she’s in the top 10 agents of 2007.  Woot!

For any authors out there looking for industry information and insight from an agent, I discovered via a friend of mine that Nathan Bransford, Agent, has a blog and he gives good links as well writes great blog posts about industry information.

So, anyone looking to gain knowledge of this vast industry, you can find his blog here.

Other blogs to check out that are helpful industry-wise are:

BookEnds, LLC
Lyons Literary,  LLC
Kristin Nelson

You can find awesome resources and articles at Lynn Viehl’s Blog, Paperback Writer.  Also, Julie Leto did some good articles over at the Plot Monkeys.

So, there you go.  Some good linkage.  Go forth and explore.  Let me know if you find anything you enjoy.

I’m back!

October 18, 2007

I’ll admit, I’ve been a serious slacker on this blog, and I apologize. Life is really kicking my bottom! The day job is getting crazier, editing has picked up like crazy, and all the other things I do for Whiskey Creek Press just keep escalating. I’ve started working with a personal trainer at the gym to keep motivated and get in shape, so that’s pretty much every day (but lord, the energy I have now!). I’ve driven down south two weekends in a row (ugh), and have various family outings and activities pretty much every weekend until January.

So, what have I done now? I’ve joined the 70 Days of Sweat again. *smacks forehead* What am I thinking? I don’t have time to write!

And that is why I joined! Because I need to make time to write! I haven’t touched my MS in like two months, one because I was having that mental dilemma over erotic vs. hot (I decided to stay with erotic for now), but also because I have so much going on in the fall.

Well, NO EXCUSES anymore for me! I will write, and I will make time for it! If I need Ms. Lauren Dane pinging me all the time since she’s now a cool sponsor and all to keep me motivated, ok! If I need to kick Marissa’s butt so she’ll kick mine and we can keep ourselves on track, ok!

So watch out, Sven, because although I have no time this week, this weekend starts it all for me again!

Oh, and as a side note, CONGRATULATIONS to one of my WCPT authors, Beth Kery, for signing with the Bradford Literary Agency! Laura is Marissa’s (and many other noteworthy authors’) agent, and she got another gem when she signed you! While I know it means fewer works with WCP, I can’t wait to see you in the big time! Woot!

So, I Spoke With Laura…

And she didn’t mention any more rejections. Whew. That’s a good thing. That means that there are six possibilities left. In some ways I wish they’d just get to it already and do a “Yay” or “Nay” thing, but on the other hand I’m glad they’re not rushing because just before RWA they could just go through and “Nay” a whole crap load of manuscripts. I’m glad that’s not the way it’s happening. WHEW.

Okay, so I was wrong.  Sigh.  There is ONE more rejection, totaling four.  But that still leaves five options left.  I can live with that… for now.

Whew!

June 18, 2007

I emailed Laura earlier to see if there were any new rejections and there aren’t!  Woot!  No more rejections!  That means I’m only 33.33% rejected so far!  LOL   That means I’ve still got 66.66% probability of a, “We love your story!”  <G>

I’m such a dork.  LOL…

My Agent Totally Rocks…

June 5, 2007

My agent, Laura Bradford, of Bradford Literary Agency, is selling books right and left. None of them are mine, but that’s beside the point! Go Laura!

Here are a few of the deals she’s made lately…

Ann Aguirre’s GRIMSPACE, sci-fi with romantic undertones introducing a jumper whose fractured consciousness holds a secret that could change the world as she knows it, if she lives long enough to remember, to Anne Sowards of Ace, in a nice deal, plus the sequel WANDERLUST, by Laura Bradford of Bradford Literary Agency (world English).

Ann Aguirre’s FALLING and a second book featuring scrappy space jumper superstar Sirantha Jax and a rogue band of fugitives who battle their way through grim space and hostile worlds, to Ace, in a nice deal, to Laura Bradford at Bradford Literary Agency (NA).

Operation G-Spot author Jodi Lynn Copeland’s two contemporary erotic romances, to Hilary Sares at Kensington Aphrodisia, in a nice deal, by Laura Bradford at Bradford Literary Agency (world).

Christine Zampi writing as Christie Kelley’a HER SCANDALOUS PROPOSAL, a sexy Regency-set historical about a spinster and budding novelist who is determined to learn about the pleasures of carnal love (for “research” of course!), to John Scognamiglio for Kensington Zebra, in a nice deal, for two books, by Laura Bradford at Bradford Literary Agency (world).

The last one is HUGE considering that the publishers consider Regencies to be “taboo” and weren’t going to be buying any more. Nice, huh?

I’m going to be honest. While I am thrilled for these authors’ success, I’m jealous and envious of these authors. I want my book to be one of those that are selling.

Green is such a bad color for me. Sigh.

Let’s get this party started…

April 20, 2007

Ok, I figure I’ll start this off with a BANG! LOL. My name is Kate Scott, and I’m an editor and writer. My dear sister Marissa and I decided to start this blog to talk about everything. Editing, writing, reading, uh, other blogs, families, um, hot men, lots and lots of sex, etc. etc. etc. In other words – everything!

There will be no holds barred on this blog! I will probably promote the authors for whom I edit (because I LOVE them), and we will do our darndest to get word out about our favorite authors, their releases, what we’re reading, maybe have author days, who the heck knows. Oh, and we’ll be able to keep you all updated on OUR work too! Woot! Like, for instance, Marissa just got signed by an AGENT! *jealous* But I’ll let her tell you all about that herself. 🙂

What’s the plan for this blog, really? No idea. Just whatever we feel like, whenever we feel like it. 🙂

Welcome to our blog!
