Writing is hard

April 2, 2008

There are so many different days with writing. Sometimes, like yesterday, it just flows from my fingertips, and I love every word.

Other days, like today, I can’t seem to get a rhythm going, the words all seem like crap, and nothing wants to come out. I can’t think of the next scene, I can’t think of the next action.

Today is definitely one of those days. I finished the editing I had to do to leave time for writing, and now I’m sitting here just staring, writing a few sentences here and there, knowing it’s not right but not really knowing how to fix it.

Grr to frustrating writing days.

Wednesday Writing Update

March 26, 2008

Ok, so good things to report today. I’ve pretty much finished revisions of the beginning of the book, so now I can get working on new stuff, which is great, since I haven’t in a while.

All in all, with all the revisions and additions and deletions that I did, I ended up adding about 2,000 words to the story as a whole. I wrote a WHOLE lot more than that in general, because because I deleted so much, it averaged to about 2k of additions. And I’m totally satisfied with that!

Also, I finished first edits on a book I’m editing for WCP. It was a great story and really easy edits, so I was happy sending that over to the author yesterday. I should be getting back edits shortly from another author, so I’ll have those to do over the weekend.

Things seem to feel really good right now. And baby’s doing great! We’ll be painting the nursery this weekend. As of today, I’ve officially started the 7th month! 🙂

When it all falls apart…

March 21, 2008

You know how I seemed so utterly enthused yesterday about writing? Well, I wrote over 2000 words yesterday. In one day. I was so proud of myself.

Only to find out this morning that work had had some sort of server error in the middle of my writing, so it didn’t save ANYTHING of what I did. Nothing. There are a lot of people up in arms this morning about their work not being saved, but I’m DEVASTATED. I had e-mailed myself the document when I was finished, as I always do, only to open it this morning to see THE OLD DRAFT. I had been saving and saving all afternoon and it had saved NOTHING. Freaking. Server.
Luckily I had sent a scene to Marissa to look at, so I have that. And I have the general idea of what happened, so it shouldn’t take me TOO long to rewrite. But egads, what a serious blow. I perfected a lot there, and to have to do it all again… It’s hard and intimidating, when coming in today I was ready and raring on hitting the next chapter.

Sigh. Off to work while I have at least some memory of what I wrote… 😦

Listen up, BICHOK

March 20, 2008

No, I did not just swear (though it sounded kind of mean, huh? ;-)). BICHOK stands for Butt In Chair, Hands On Keyboard.

And you know what? That’s what I’ve been doing. I have forced myself to get over this huge fear of rewriting the beginning of my book. Why did I need to? I couldn’t move on later in the book with it written as it was, so I knew it needed to happen.

Do you know what it feels like to look at 100 single spaced pages and know that a good portion of it is going to change? Gah. INTIMIDATING.

But sometimes you just have to open the document, stare at it in fright for 10 minutes, and put those hands on the keyboard and START. Work through the fear, and find the story again. Yes, it’s changing. Change is scary. But I’ve started. And every time I open that document and change a little more, it still scares me.

But I told that BICHOK I would do it, and so I am.

On a side note, Jaci Burton wrote a lovely post today on the 70 Days of Sweat blog about one of my biggest faults – comparing yourself to other writers. Check it out!

Da pain, da pain…

March 5, 2008

Ok, so didn’t anyone see The Three Musketeers? Chevy Chase? Anyway…

I haven’t done too well on my word count since last count, lol. I had lofty goals to write in the evenings after work, but I’ve found that baby is making me tired again. Brain doesn’t seem to work after 6:30pm, sigh.

And today I’m having back issues. Lower back is KILLING me, and there’s a muscle in my leg that keeps spasming. Yay for me.

I have hope I’ll get back into this story, that I’ll get more energy, and that da pain will go away. So think good thoughts!

Sven first day!

March 2, 2008

Ok, so this is the first day of Sven’s 70 Days of Sweat challenge! I have to say, I have MISSED writing. I got my editing goal done before noon, so afternoon was used for writing. So, here’s my progress for today.

Started at 50,634 words

Ended at 51,730 words

I deleted 256 previous words, so I ended up writing a total of 1352 words for the day! Woot! Since my goal is 500 words a day, this is great for me!

And so it begins! 😀

Sven, Sven, Sven!

February 29, 2008

Ok, is everyone as excited as me about Sven starting tomorrow? Granted, I’ll be hanging around the Torrid Readers Loop all day tomorrow for the kick off to the big bash, but LORD am I excited to get back to writing!

Who all is participating this time? Are you ready?

Writing…

February 25, 2008

It’s almost time for Sven. I’m getting in the habit of writing on a regular basis so I can keep up. I probably won’t write as much as some people, but so long as I meet my goal or surpass it, it’s all good. And I will do that. I’m psyched.

I’ll be getting edits back from my agent (the Lovely Laura) soon, so I’ll be tackling those when they come in, but until then, I’m working on the untitled–the serial killer. I love it. It’s challenging and different and so different from anything I thought I’d ever write.

Have I mentioned I love this story?

Happy Valentine’s Day! And other such blather…

February 14, 2008

Hubby and I don’t actually celebrate this day, and I’m very thankful for it. It’s enough for me to have to think about what to get him for our quasi-anniversary in March, his birthday in May, our wedding anniversary in September, and then Christmas. Add another day to it? I think not.

Yesterday royally sucked. After getting 4 inches of snow overnight on Tuesday night, we woke up to sleet. Ok, not so bad. But then it POURED POURED POURED all day, until everything was absolutely flooded. I had one of those moments on the way home where I was watching the cars in front of me to see if they made it across this sudden LAKE in the middle of the road. Since there were other smaller cars chancing it (I have a Corolla, so I watch those little cars), I decided to chance it myself. I managed to get across, praying the whole time that I would make it. I didn’t want to be one of “those” people who are idiotic enough to cross a lake with their car. Plus, since I’m pregnant, I didn’t want to get stuck in freezing water!

In other news, I cannot WAIT until April 1st! Why? It means the online party I’m planning for Whiskey Creek Press will be over! LOL. I have so many excited authors participating in the party, but it’s SO much work to plan it all, and I’m doing it on my own. I’ll have to see if it’s worth it on April 1st. 😛

I’ve also decided to join up for another round of the 70 Day of Sweat. The first round went REALLY well, and though I joined the second round, I petered out after only two weeks because work got crazy and well, I got pregnant, lol. The fatigue that accompanied the first trimester made it hard to even get through the day, much less add anything additional to it. But I REALLY want to finish this book before baby comes to get it sent out to agents, so I need a big motivator to do it.

So, that’s what I’m up to. No TT today, as I’m completely out of ideas for it. But what are you all up to? What’s on your plate this Valentine’s Day?

Accountability and Sven

February 11, 2008

Well, I promised to be accountable for my writing and write at least one page a day, and I’ve been doing that. Now Sven is back and ready to kick some ass… well, I’ve got to stop him and do some ass kicking of my own. Heh.
